I love to travel, and I’ve been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to do a fair amount of it in my life so far.

  • Japan. When a friend of mine was teaching English in Tokyo I visited there for a couple of weeks when he took some time off work, and we toured the country a bit. What an amazing place… from the beautiful temples to the ultramodern city cores, Japan is unlike any place on Earth. The culture is so different from what western people are used to but unlike most different cultures they are also wealthy and modern, it’s neat to see how many things can be so different from the way North Americans and Europeans do but still perfectly functional and often better.

  • Tunisia. This was an unforgettable experience, as I’d never before been to a Muslim country before. By complete coincidence I happened to be in Tunis on Sept 11 2001, and first saw images of the WTC attack on Arabic television. Also, the ruins at Carthage were incredible and I’m happy to say that I rode a camel in the Sahara desert. Plus I got to see where Star Wars and Life of Brian were filled, and riding a horrible ferry across the Mediteranean and first seeing the sun rise over Africa was awesome.
  • Europe. Everyone goes to Europe and I’m no exception. Been to France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and lots of the little ones that don’t really count too. Notable events were the city ruins of Pompeii where you can actually walk around in an ancient Roman town, and getting stuck in a town in the middle of nowhere where all the rooms were sold out in every hotel so I slept out under the stars at the foot of the Mediteranean in a sleeping bag.
  • Australia. My wife and I traveled there and it was a pretty neat experience. Did lots of kitchy tourist things like visiting Steve Irwin’s Australia Zoo (crikey!) and saw lots of oversized statues of things (pineapples, bananas, shrimp, bulls, etc). But also visited some really cool cities like Sydney and Brisbane, and went snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef. Also they speak funny and drive on the wrong side of the world, but you already knew that part. Oh and I hugged a koala bear.
  • North America. Okay well I live there so it doesn’t really count right? Well I’ve been to most of the states and provinces in my various travels and am lucky enough to have friends all over the continent which means I usually have a place to stay when I travel here. I once got two Via/Amtrak railpasses back to back and rode the train all over the country for two months, going from Vancouver to Olympica to Eugene then Portland then San Francisco then San Diego to Tijuana then Albaquerque to St Louis then Chicago to Minneapolis then Washington, Boston, New York, Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, Halifax, Charlottetown, Winnipeg, Jasper, and then back home.
