Lately I’ve found myself playing a lot of the strategy game “Battle for Wesnoth“. Amazing for an open source game, it has pretty decent (though simple) graphics, a good soundtrack, and really fun gameplay with well balanced detailed scenarios. It’s available for Linux, Mac, and Windows.. so fun for the whole family.

I got about a month of fun out of Wesnoth and then it started being unfun. It’s great, easy to learn, but it has a number of significant drawbacks:
1) Many of the campaigns are significantly unforgiving, so if you lose some of your high level units you’re fuxxored.
2) Some of the combat mechanics are very, very weird, such as wanting your units to die so that you can attack the same person over and over again on the same hexside.
3) The lack of variety eventually gets to you.
That all said, I still had a very, very fun month with it. :-)
